On April 26th, 2017, the cabinet of Japan created the Japanese Green Card for Highly-Skilled Foreign Professionals system. The goal of the new green card system is to greatly shorten the 5 year residence period for an application for permission of permanent residence. Highly skilled foreign nationals are allowed to apply for a Japanese green card after only one year of residence if they acquire over 80 points or more on the new points-based system for highly-skilled professionals. Those who have three years of residency in Japan may acquire a green card with a score of 70 points or higher. Those that qualify for this green card must be skilled in advanced academic research activities, advanced specialized/technical activities (engineering, IoT, medical, humanities), and advanced business management activities.
