Export quota

On 2 May 2018, the Minister for Industry, Foreign Trade and Services, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil announced in conjunction with the U.S. imposition of additional import tariffs on steel and aluminium, that the Brazilian policy prevents the transhipment of steel and aluminium from Brazil to the United States.

The official press release together with observations made on other jurisdictions referring to the same matter, suggests a voluntary export restraint set by Brazil, although it is not formally acknowledged by either the U.S. or Brazilian governments.

In this sense, the work carried out by Brazilian diplomats and representatives of the metal industry and the government has led to the exclusion of Brazil from the list of countries set by the US where the import tariffs on steel and aluminium have been increased.
