Import tariff quota

On February 17, 2017, the Brazilian Foreign Trade Council (i.e. CAMEX by its acronym in Portuguese) issued Resolution 14, reducing the 0% import tariff quota set on unalloyed aluminium from 240,000 to 173,000 tonnes. This tariff-rate quota was set by the Government of Brazil by including this tariff line on the List of Exceptions to the Common External Tariff.

The new quota applies until August 17, 2017.

Update
On July 5, 2017, CAMEX issued Resolution 53, renewing the temporary 0% import tariff quota on aluminium. The new quota was set at 346,000 tonnes. The new quota applies until June 30, 2018 (see related state acts).

List of Exceptions to the Common External Tariff
The tariff codes were included in the List of Exceptions to the Common External Tariff (LETEC) of Mercosur. LETEC is a mechanism that allows member states of Mercosur to apply customs duties that are lower or higher than otherwise listed in the Mercosur Common External Tariff schedule. However, the tariffs shall not surpass the ceilings given by the WTO.

Mercosur Decision CMC no. 26/15 gives Brazil the right to maintain a LETEC of 100 codes based on the NCM until 31 December 2021. Due to this restriction, Brazil had to retrieve a number of other goods, as noted above.
