On 11 August 2014, the Ministry of Labour of Saudi Arabia announced that as of next Muharram (the first month of the Islamic calendar which in 2015 corresponded to 14 October 2015), the duration of the residence permits that are being granted to foreigners will be reduced from six to four years.

In addition, according to official announcements in the seventh month of the next lunar year (counting from the announcement date), the duration will be further reduced to two years. The decision of the Ministry stems from the initiative to encourage employers to boost the employment of local Saudi professionals rather than foreigners.
