Tax or social insurance relief

The Illinois Economic Development for a Growing Economy (EDGE) program, administered by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, is designed to offer a special tax incentive to encourage companies to locate or expand operations in Illinois when there is active consideration of a competing location in another state. The program can provide tax credits to qualifying companies, equal to the amount of state income taxes withheld from the salaries of employees in the newly created jobs. The nonrefundable credits can be used against corporate income taxes to be paid over a period not to exceed ten years.

In 2016 the department announced three agreements with Amazon for facilities in the state: One dated July 22 for $42 million, related to a facility in Joliet; another dated December 15 for $12,899,250 (Aurora); and the third dated December 15 for $27,825,937 (Monee).
