Effective May 1, 2017 Switzerland and the United States adopted a U.S.-Swiss Privacy Shield. The framework is intended to provide companies in each country with a mechanism to comply with data-protection requirements when transferring personal data in support of commerce. It is intended to protect the fundamental rights of persons in either party whose personal data is transferred to the other, and to facilitate trade by bringing legal clarity for businesses relying on data transfers. This mechanism replaces the earlier U.S.-Swiss Safe Harbor Framework.
