Labour market access

On 9 August 2011, the government of the United Kingdom implemented its new "Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent)" immigration scheme for non-EU/EFTA citizens. Up until 31 March 2012, a total of 1'000 additional visas shall be issued to "exceptionally talented" applicants from humanities, science, arts and engeneering. The total number of visas issued in a second round of the scheme shall be announced thereafter.

Interested applicants must be recommended by either the Royal Society, the Arts Council England, the Royal Academy of Engineering, or the British Academy. The number of recommendations each of these bodies may issue is limited to 300 each for the former two and 200 each for the latter two institutions.

Applicants may not be in the UK when submitting their request. The scheme does not require employer sponsorship.
