In the 2009 budget statement by the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, the minister stated that import duties on rice, wheat and cooking oil which were removed during the period of rising food prices in 2008 will be restored. The measure is yet to be re-introduced as government has not announced an inception date.
The airport tax for international travel outside West Africa has been increased from US$50 to US$75. This was contained in the 2009 budget statement. The purpose of this increase is to raise revenues and pay for improvements in security at the airport. This measure was implemented on 1 July 2009.
