On 4 July 2011 the UK Border Agency announced changes in its rules for student visas, the so-called fourth tier of the UK's point-based immigration system. According to the relevant press release these changes were presented to Parliament on 13 June 2011 and come into effect on 4 July 2011.
The new rules limit the entitlement of foreign students to work part time or full time during college vacations. (An earlier press release said that such entitlements would be limited to students at Higher Educational Institutions and publicly-funded Further Education colleges. Presumably, therefore, students at other, private sector education suppliers would not be eligible.) Moreover, sponsorship of dependants for those studying in the UK is being restricted to courses of a longer duration than in the past. Rules on student funding and ability to speak English were tightened too.
