Import tariff

On the 1 August 2009, through the implementation of its policy review on the iron and steel industry, the government of Malaysia adopted the following changes:
n Manufacturing licences will be granted without restriction
n Changes of licence requirements for flat iron and steel products cover import licences being issued free of charge and export licence requirements being abolished
n Gradual import duty reduction on steel long products to 10% from 1 August 2009 and to 5% from 1 January 2010
n Gradual import duty reduction on steel flat products from 50% to 25% from 1 August 2009 and between 0% and 10% from 1 January 2018
n Import duty exemption for steel flat products is given to raw materials on specific conditions and to various goods not produced locally.
n Abolishment of import duty exemption for seven sectors and for traders of flat products
n Abolishment of import controls on hot-rolled coils, cold-rolled coils and electro-galvanised iron
