Import tariff

From 1 July 2011, the government of India exempts imports of raw sugar from all import duties subject to enumerated conditions. These conditions are that either:

  • the importer is a sugar factory or sugar refinery,
  • the importer is a bulk consumer, or
  • the importer "produces before the Deputy Commissioner of Customs or the Assistant Commissioner of Customs, as the case may be, a proof to show that the contract for import of such sugar is duly registered with Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA)."

Initially the stated measure was scheduled to become effective on 1 April 2011 by Notification 2/2011. The measure has been extended by Notification 55/2011.
