Import ban

The UAE has banned all imports of pork with immediate effect in a bid to tackle the threat of swine flu. The General Secretariat of Municipalities based in Abu Dhabi released a circular banning all imports of both the meat and its derivatives regardless of their origin on 29 April 2009.

Readers might note, however, that Mr. Majid al-Mansouri, Secretary-General of the Environment Agency, has reportedly told the press that there is no ban on pork imports. This accounts for the qualified evaluation given by the GTA to this measure.
