Import licensing requirement

On 30 May 2016, the Indonesian Ministry of Trade issued regulation 41/M-DAG/PER/5/2016 changing the import provisions on cell phones and tablets earlier set in regulations 82/M-DAG/PER/12/2012 and 38/M-DAG/PER/8/2013 (cf. Related Measures).
The 2016 amendment introduces new obligations for importers (such as online registration) but in general simplifies the import procedure for cell phones and tablets. For instance, it cuts down the number of documents required in the import license application from eight to four documents. The importer would also no longer need to supply a 1-year import plan with the list of products, their respective ports of loading and unloading, as well as an official letter from the foreign distributor/factory/brand owner proving the import plan.
The amendment came into force on 1 July 2016.
The list of affected trading partners is based on 6-digit HS codes 847130 and 851712, using 2014 trade figures.
