Import tariff

On 11 May 2015, a Swiss parliamentary Committee presented a drafted amendment of the trade law reclassifying uncooked seasoned meat. The reclassification would de facto increase the out-of quota tariff for that meat (HS code 1602 50 99) from CHF 638 to CH 2000 per 100 kg of meat.
According to the preamble of Committee's draft, the import tariff agreed at the Uruguay Round "represents a problem for domestic meat producers (rising price pressure, distorting the market structure). Furthermore, it 'the tariff' also creates concerns that imported meat was produced according to rules, which are not in line with the Swiss animal welfare policies." (own translation).
The amendment was passed by the Swiss parliament on 18 December 2015 and came into force on 1 July 2016.
The list of affected trading partners is based on the 2015 figures for the 6-digit HS code 160250.
