On 6 July 2016, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam issued Decision 2847 / QD-BCT initiating a safeguard investigation on imports of certain pre-painted aluminum - zinc alloy coated steel sheet and strips, pre-painted galvanized steel street and strip, pre-pained cold-rolled steel sheet and strip. The products subject to investigation are classified under the following HS code subheadings: 7210.70.10, 7210.70.90, 7212.40.10, 7212.40.20, 7212.40.90, 7225.99.90, 7226.99.19, 7226.99.99. The complaint was lodged on 24 May 2016 by Nghiêm and Chính Partnership Law Firm, who represent three local producers i.e. Ði Thiên Lc Joint Stock Company, Nam Kim Steel and Tôn Ðông Á Company.

On 15 June 2017, the Vietnamese authorities imposed a definitive safeguard duty on imports of the subject good. The rate if duty is 19% and is imposed on goods beyond a specific import quota. The duty-free safeguard quota is increased on 15 June every year for a period of three years and varies depending on the country of origin. 

On 15 June 2020, the Vietnamese authorities terminated the definitive safeguard duty on imports of the sub. The duty was terminated as it was set to expire.
