Import tariff

U.S. Customs and Border Protection published a classification ruling in the June 1, 2016 edition of the Customs Bulletin and Decisions by which it is reclassifying patient lifting devices as other lifting, handling, loading or unloading machinery under HTSUS 8428.90.0290 (and hence duty-free) rather than as medical furniture in HTSUS 9402.90.0020 (and hence subject to a 5.3% duty) or other types of lifting machinery under HTSUS 8428.90.0190 (and hence duty-free). The impact of this reclassification is thus mixed: It will have no impact on the applicable tariff for some projects, but will result in a substantial tariff reduction for others. Comments on this modification are due no later than July 1, and the final revocations and modifications will be effective for goods entered or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption on or after August 1. Canada, China, Germany, Japan, and Mexico are the principal suppliers of this product.
