In April 2016, the government of India initiated a new safeguard investigation. The safeguard investigation was concluded in December 2016 without the imposition of duties.

On 19 April 2016, the Indian Directorate General of Safeguards, Customs and Central Excise initiated a safeguard investigation on imports of unwrought aluminum. The products subject to investigation are classified under the following HS code: 7601. This investigation follows the application lodged by Vedanta limited - Aluminium & Power; Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd.; and Hindalco Industries Limited.
On 13 December 2016, the Indian authorities concluded the safeguard investigation without the imposition of duties.
