Effective 17 November 2013, Sri Lanka reduced the Special Commodity Levy on potatoes from Rs. 40 per kg. to Rs. 10 per kg., on big onions from Rs. 35 per kg. to Rs. 10 per kg. and on Red onions from Rs. 15 per kg. to Rs. 5 per kg.
The levy on potatoes was increased on 7 February 2014 (see related measure).
According to the 2014 Recent Economic Developments report of the Sri Lankan Central Bank, the reduced levy on big and red onions was extended for 5 months on 17 March 2014. On 12 August 2014, the levy on Red Onions was at Rs. 5 per kg was extend for 4 months while that on Big Onions was incerased to Rs. 25 per kg. (see related measure).
The Special Commodity Levy is a composite duty on the product and no other tax, duty, cess etc. is applicable on the said product while the levy is valid.
