Government takes measure to check jute imports
On 18 September 2015, the Indian Office of the Jute Commissioner issued a Jute Import Order changing the rules for registration of raw jute and jute porduct imports. With the Order, the Commissioner cancelled the registration of all Indian importers and required fresh registrations. Also, such importers are now required to file a monthly report of their imports, failure to which may lead to cancelation of the registration. Traders who purchase these raw materials from the importers will also register and report their monthly tradings and the entire value chain from the importer to the end user shall be registered with the Jute Commissioner.
According to several news reports, this move has constituted a Non-Tariff Barrier by India to protect its domestic jute industry from excessive imports from neighboring countries having duty free access to the market.
