Import tariff

On 21 June 2018, the Australian Department of Home Affairs announced that on 31 May 2018, the federal Parliament created a new concessional item for clinical trial kits and placebo drugs. As the result, the import of goods classifiable under this item will enjoy a duty-free rate.

In order to qualify for the import tariff benefit, goods must compile with the following requirements:

  • clinical trial kits must not indicate whether their contents are medicaments or placebos;
  • the kits must contain only medicaments and/or placebo whether or not in syringes or other delivery mechanisms;
  • the items or packaging necessary for the safe transport and/or storage of the goods are not a part of the kit; and
  • the kits do not contain goods other than any associated and necessary documentation and forms.

This new legislation entered into force on 1 July 2018.
