ANNOUNCED AS TEMPORARYNo
On 5 April 2018, the Republic of Korea submitted a notification under article 12.5 of the WTO Safeguard Agreement on the decision to suspend concessions and other obligations stipulated in said agreement. The proposed suspension follows the imposition of safeguard duties on imports of certain large residential washers and parts thereof from 7 February 2018 by the United States, see related state act. The Republic of Korea in this context stated that: "The further details of the suspension of concessions and other obligations will be provided to the Council for Trade in Goods before their application. The application of the suspension of concessions and other obligations will come into effect on 7 February 2021 in case the Unites States decides to extend the period of application of the measure in accordance with Article 7 of the Agreement or following the date of a decision from the WTO Dispute Settlement Body that the safeguard measure imposed by the United States is incompatible with the WTO Agreements, whichever is earlier. The suspension of concessions and other obligations will continue to apply until the United States' safeguard measure is lifted."
Notably, China also notified the WTO of suspending concessions and other obligations in reaction to the imposition of duties on certain large residential washers by the United States, see related state act.
