ANNOUNCED AS TEMPORARYNo
On 4 April 2018, China submitted a notification under article 12.5 of the WTO Safeguard Agreement on the decision to suspend concessions and other obligations stipulated in said agreement. The proposed suspension follows the imposition of safeguard duties on imports of large residential washers from 7 February 2018 until 7 February 2021 by the United States, see related state act. As such, China will impose equivalent duties to the amount of trade affected by said US measure. The country in this context stated that: "China may apply the proposed suspension from either three years and one day after 7 February 2018 — in the event that the United States extends the measure — or from the date of a decision by the WTO Dispute Settlement Body that the safeguard measure imposed by the US is incompatible with the WTO Agreements, whichever is the earlier date.". China did not specify which products and the level of duty.
Notably, the Republic of Korea also notified the WTO of suspending concessions and other obligations in reaction to the imposition of duties on certain large residential washers by the United States, see related state act.
