ANNOUNCED AS TEMPORARYNo
On 21 May 2018, Turkey submitted a notification under article 12.5 of the WTO Safeguard Agreement on the decision to suspend concessions and other obligations stipulated in said agreement. The proposed suspension follows the imposition of tariffs on imports of certain steel and aluminium goods by the United States on 23 March 2018, see related state acts.
As Turkey does not view the measures imposed by the United States for reasons of national security, rather that these are safeguard measures, Turkey reserves the right to impose additional duties as listed in said notification. As such, the country reserves the right to impose additional duties on 21 June 2018. Following the suspension of concessions and other obligations, Turkey imposed import tariffs on the goods from the United States listed in the WTO notification, see related intervention.
Notably, five other countries also notified the WTO of suspending concessions and other obligations in reaction to the imposition of steel and aluminium duties by the United States, see related state acts.
