ANNOUNCED AS TEMPORARYNo
On 18 May 2018, the European Union submitted a notification under article 12.5 of the WTO Safeguard Agreement of proposed suspension of concessions and other obligations stipulated in said agreement. The proposed suspension follows the imposition of tariffs on imports of certain steel and aluminium goods by the United States on 23 March 2018, see related state acts.
As the European Union does not view the measures imposed by the United States for reasons of national security, rather that these are safeguard measures, the Union reserves the right to impose additional duties. As such, the proposed suspension will commence from 20 June 2018. Following the suspension of concessions and other obligations, the European Union imposed import tariffs on a number of goods from the United States, see related intervention.
Notably, five other countries also notified the WTO of suspending concessions and other obligations in reaction to the imposition of steel and aluminium duties by the United States, see related state acts.
