ANNOUNCED AS TEMPORARYNo
On 18 May 2018, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) announced the elimination of the general duty rebate set on certain hot-rolled steel products enclosed under tariff subheading 7225.99. With this action, the import duty has been reduced from 10% to 0%.
The announcement followed the recommendations made by the International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa on its report 575 and was published on Notice 509 on the Government Gazette 41633.
The elimination of the full rebate was requested by Leon Jin Specialty Steel (Africa) (Pty) Ltd stating that there was no local production of the hot-rolled steel plate classified under tariff subheading 7225.99, hence the import duty unnecessarily increased production costs for the local industry.
