On 9 May 2018, the Indian Ministry of Commerce & Industry through Public Notice No. 4/2015-2020 relaxed the requirement to obtain a Pre-Inspection Certificate for import of metallic waste and scrap from safe countries provided the consignments are cleared through six specified ports that have operational portal monitors and container scanners. The safe countries for such imports are allowed are the USA, the UK, the EU, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
Imports of such waste and scrap from countries other than listed above or if cleared at any other port, irrespective to the country of origin, will be subject to a Pre-Inspection Certificate from the country of origin.
