Import tariff quota

On November 24, 2016, the Secretariat for Central American Economic Integration Process (i.e COMIECO by its Spanish acronym) adopted Resolution 378-2016 reducing the duty-free tariff rate quotas set yellow corn (HS Codes 1005.90.30.00 and 1005.90.20.00).

The new volume set was 100,000 metric tonnes for yellow corn. Previously, the volumes set was 200,000 metric tonnes in the case of corn.

The applicable import tariff outside the quota is 15%.

This Resolution only applied to Guatemala and entered into force on January 1, 2017, for a twelve-month period.

Update
On November 24, 2017, the COMIECO adopted Resolution 395-2017 increasing by another 55,000 metric tones the quota set yellow corn. The new quota applied until December 31, 2017.

On the same date, Resolution 394-2017 adopted by the COMEICO also renewed the applicable duty-free quota of 50,000 tonnes set on white maize. In addition, the new legislation increased the quota set on yellow corn, rice, and black beans (see related state acts).
