On 15 November 2017, the European Commission allocated a total value of EUR 107.1 million (USD 128.52 million) for funding promotional campaigns of EU agricultural products implemented in third countries for the year 2018.

The budget consists of promotional topics of EU goods in third countries with an additional focus on promotional campaigns in China, Hong Kong, Macao, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Chinese Taipei, Canada, the USA, Mexico and Colombia as well as the South East Asian region and the Indian subcontinent.

In this context, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Phil Hogan, stated in a press release that: "The EU is the world's largest trader of agri-food products and the best address in the world for high-quality food. I had the occasion to witness first-hand the interest consumers and businesses have worldwide for EU agri-food products on my several business missions conducted abroad. I welcome these new promotion programmes which have in the past successfully opened the doors to new applicants and increased our visibility across the world."

The budget also allocates funds for promotional campaigns in the internal market, see related intervention. According to a press release issued in January 2018, two-thirds of the budget is to be allocated to promoting EU agricultural goods in non-EU countries.

Additionally, EUR 5 million (USD 6 million) is allocated to programmes or campaigns focussing on European sectors affected by an unexpected "market disturbance, loss of consumer confidence or other specific problems". In the event that no such disturbances have occurred the budget is allocated to certain promotional programmes in third countries.

Notably, beneficiaries of the programme have certain obligations, see related intervention for further details.

In 2017, EUR 63 million (USD 75.6 million) was allocated specifically for promotional measures in third countries, whilst EUR 27.95 million (USD 33.54 million) was allocated for the promotion of EU agricultural goods in the internal market or in third countries, see related state act.
