On 14 December 2017, Sri Lanka through Extraordinary Gazette No. 2049/32 increased the special commodity levy on various vegetable oils as follows:

  • On crude soyabean oil from Rs. 95 to Rs. 110 per kg. and other soyabean oil from Rs. 105 to Rs. 130 per kg. 
  • On crude palm oil and palm stearin from Rs. 95 to Rs. 110 per kg.
  • On palm oil imported in packaging of 210 liters and below from Rs. 110 to Rs. 135 per kg.
  • On crude palm olein from Rs. 100 to Rs. 115 per kg. and other palm olein oil from Rs. 110 to Rs. 135 per kg.
  • On crude sunflower oil from Rs. 95 to Rs. 110 per kg. and other sunflower oil from Rs. 105 to Rs. 130 per kg. 
  • On coconut oil from Rs. 105 to Rs. 130 per kg.
  • On crude palm kernel or babassu oil from Rs. 105 to Rs. 130 per kg. and other palm kernel or babassu oil from Rs. 110 to Rs. 145 per kg.

The Special Commodity Levy is a composite duty on the product and no other tax, duty, cess etc. is applicable on the said product while the levy is valid.

This levy has been announced for a period of 6 months commencing 15 December 2017. However, it was later increased on 31 May 2018.
