Import-related non-tariff measure, nes
The new country of origin labelling rules require certain Italian-manufactured or Italian-marketed dairy products to be labelled with the country of origin where the milk was extracted, processed and packaged. The goods subject to these requirements include milk and dairy products containing milk such as butter, yoghurt, mozzarella and cheeses among others.
The Italian Minister of Agriculture Maurizio Martina in this context stated: "Citizens must be informed in order to decide what to put on the table, which means protecting Made in Italy, the work of our breeders and to grow a real food culture".
The requirements enter into force 90 days after its publication in the official gazette, i.e. on 19 April 2017 and shall apply shall until 31 March 2019.
A similar labelling requirement was introduced on durum wheat used in pasta and on rice in August 2017, see related state acts.
