The new country of origin labelling rules require the subject products to be labelled with the country of the grain cultivation and country of milling of durum wheat. The requirements do not apply to the subject good manufactured or marketed in another country of the European Union or a third country i.e. the labelling requirements apply to Italian manufactured or Italian marketed goods.

The Italian Minister of Agriculture Maurizio Martina in this context stated: "Our aim is to give maximum transparency to consumer information, thus enhancing the protection of producers and the relationship of two key sources for Made in Italy. "

According to Reuters, the Italian Minister of Agriculture Maurizio Martina has additionally stated: “We are putting Italy in the vanguard of Europe when it comes to labelling as a competitive tool for the Italian (agriculture) sector.”

The requirements enter into force 180 days after its publication in the official gazette, i.e. on 13 February 2018 and shall apply shall until 31 December 2020.

A similar labelling requirement was introduced on rice, see related state act.
