In July 2015, the elements of the Chinese national standard GB18584, pertaining to quality standards in wooden furniture, were updated, reducing limits on 'volatile compounds', in particular formaldehyde, in such furniture to levels that are out of line with accepted international standards (ISO).
Several foreign companies brought action through the WTO TBT Committee complaining that the standards were unnecessarily strict, forcing foreign firms to have their products double-tested and favouring domestic Chinese producers.
