On 23 January 2009, the government of Bolivia announced its decision to expropriate Chaco Petroleum. Chaco Petroleum before the expropriation was owned 49% by Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (the state-owned oil and gas company of Bolivia), and 51% by the Argentinian company Pan American Energy.
