Import tariff

An import Special Commodity Levy of Rs. 10 per kg. was imposed on Maize and Sorghum grains. Since SCL is a composite import duty no other import duty or taxes will be levied on these imports apart from the SCL.

The applicable duties on maize imports as on 16 May 2017 if SCL was not levied are a 15% import duty, 15% VAT, 7.5% Ports & Airport Levy, 2% Nation Building Tax and 35% Cess. Whereas the applicable duties on Sorghum grains would be 30% import duty, 15% VAT, 7.5% Ports & Airport Levy, 2% Nation Building Tax and 35% Cess.

The new levy has been announced to stay in force for a period of 6 months.
