On October 17, 2012, the Congress of Colombia passed the Statutory Law 1581 referring to the protection of personal data. This new legislation restricts data transfers out of Colombia unless the recipient country has an adequated data protection level, comparable to the standards set by the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce. Other cases where this law does not apply are the consent from the subject; the existence of international agreements dealing with this matter; international judiciary cooperation; international intelligence cooperation; medical purposes; bank transfer; or matters related to a contractual obligation.
