On 23 January 2013, the government of Argentina adopted Decree 25/2013 temporarily increasing the import tariffs on certain products, i.e. fruits, coffee, seeds, prepared foodstuffs, beverages, tobacco, organic chemicals, chemical products, rubber, wood, articles of wood, cork, footwear, ceramic products, articles of iron or steel, articles of base metal, machinery and mechanical appliances, electrical equipment, motorcycles, musical instruments, and miscellaneous manufactured articles. The new import duties were set above MERCOSUR's Common External Tariff values at 20%, 22%, 25%, 28% and 35%. Previous applicable values ranged between 0% and 20%.
The changes introduced in this state act were done under Decision 39/11 from MERCOSUR's Council of the Common Market that allowed the Member States to temporarily increased import tariffs above the values set in the Common External Tariff (see related state acts).
