On 27 January 2009, vide Notification No. 83 (RE-2008) / 2004-2009, the Government of India imposed new restrictions in the form of Minimum Export Price (MEP) requirements on the export of Basmati rice from the country.

The MEP was imposed at USD 1100 per ton. This initial intervention was superseded by an adjustment to the MEP in September 2009 (see related measure).
