On 17 March 2009, the Government of India, vide Notification No. 97 (RE-2008) / 2004-2009, declared that the import of antiques of an age exceeding hundred years and antiquarian books into India could be made freely. Importers would nevertheless be required to abide by the rules of the exporting country in this respect.
Previously, under the Foreign Trade Policy of 2004-2009, such imports were restricted, and allowed only in limited circumstances of transit, re-export and/or import by government agencies.
