Sanitary and phytosanitary measure

On 16 Sep 2013, the government of the Republic of Korea announced that it is going to ban the imports of all the fisheries products from Fukushima and 7 other prefectures in Japan. Furthermore, for the fisheries products from rest of Japan, it will also request additional inspection certificates on different radiological elements including plutonium and strontium, when even a small amount of caesium is found.

Since 2011, after the nuclear accident in Fukushima, the government had banned 50 fisheries products from the 8 prefectures(Fukushima, Ibaraki, Gunma, Miyagi, Iwate, Tochigi, Chiba and Aomori) in Japan. However, there have been increasing distrust on the Japanese inspection authority and fears over Japanese seafoods in the public. The government now upgraded the embargo.
 
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has stated that: 
"The government has concluded that the information provided by Japan so far has failed to make it clear how the incident will develop in the future." and "Under the new measure, all fisheries products from this region will be banned regardless of whether they are contaminated or not." The latter statement suggests that the ban is not scientifically based.
