On September 19, 2014, the Indian Directorate General of safeguards initiated a safeguard investigation on imports of cold-rolled flat products of stainless steel (of chromium type, 400 series encompassing all martensitic and ferritic grades as per ASTM A 240/A240 M and equivalent/ comparable specifications in other standards). The goods with width 1,700 mm and above as well as JBS (Jindal Blade Steel) grade and its equivalent are excluded from the product scope.
The products subject to investigation are classified under the following HS codes: 7219.3112, 7219.3111, 7219.3210, 7219.3310, 7219.3410, 7219.3510, 7220.2021 and 7220.9021.
This follows the application lodged by M/s. Jindal Stainless Limited.
According to the UN Comtrade Database, in 2013 the following countries exported goods classified under HS code subheadings 7219.31, 7219.32, 7219.33, 7219.34, 7219.35, 7220.20 and 7220.90 to India with a trade value over USD 1 million: China, South Korea, Japan, Finland, Malaysia, United States of America, Sweden, Germany, South Africa, Italy, Belgium, Vietnam, Mexico, Indonesia, Thailand, Spain, Brazil, United Kingdom and France.
On March 23, 2015, the Indian Directorate General of safeguards terminated the investigation without imposing any duty.
