Effective 7 February 2014, the government of Sri Lanka has increased the special commodity levy on imported potatoes from Rs.10 (USD .08) per kilogram to Rs. 25 (USD .19) per kilogram in order to boost the competitiveness of the local potato producers on the local market. The government target is Sri Lanka to 'to be self-sufficient in local potatoes by 2016'.

The levy on potaotoes was reduced later in May 2014 (see related measure).
