ANNOUNCED AS TEMPORARYNo
On 24 March 2011, India offered lower excise duties at 1% on domestically produced mobile phones costing more than INR 2000, as opposed to the normal rate of 6%.
On 1 March 2013, India took back the reduced excise duty and the normal rate will be applicable.
Excise duty is payable on goods manufactured in India, and a reduced duty creates a non-tariff barrier by making indigenous products cheaper than imported products, which pay customs duty at a different rate.
