Import quota

According to numerous and consistent reports, the Government of Nigeria has restricted fish imports since the start of 2014.

In October 2013, the Government of Nigeria announced a gradual ban on fish imports over four years, accompanied by a sharp increase in import duties in the interim period. However, that policy was never implemented and replaced in late December 2013 by announcements that fish imports would be cut by 25% each years by introducing import quotas, effective from January 2014. To date, no specific quota size has been published.

According to the seafood business news source Undercurrent News, 'some importers have obtained import quotas, but the amount is far too low compared to what the market needs' and invokes an unconfirmed figure of 100,000 metric tonnes for the first half of 2014.

Despite the uncertainty with regards to the size of the quota, the policy is reportedly in place and being enforced. Therefore, the GTA marks this measure as 'implemented'.
