On 6 June 2013, the government of Gambia introduced an import ban on frozen chicken legs. The government statedhealth and welfare of the public and "to ensure that consumers get value for their money" as the reasons for the decision. Subsequently, the President of Gambia has linked the ban to the need to improve agricultural self sufficiency (see the second Allafrica news report listed below.)
On 2 December 2013, the Government of Gambia lifted the ban on chicken legs. However, hormone threated chicken will not be accepted on the Gambian market.
