NoOn 16 January 2009, the Government of Egypt has imposed import duties on cotton yarn, cotton fabric and white sugar from India. According to decrees by the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Egypt has imposed a "precautionary fee" of 25 percent on the cost, insurance, and freight (CIF) value of these goods. This amounted to an increase in import tariffs of 5 percent for cotton and mixed yarn as well as a 10 percent increase for cotton and mixed woven fabrics.
After India had engaged in bilateral dialogue with Egypt, the Ministry of Trade and Industry announced the abolishment of the excess import tax on 8 April 2009.
