NoOn 5 December 2012, Egypt has notified the WTO of the imposition of provisional tariffs on steel rebar (HS 7213 and 7214) under the Agreement on Safeguards.
While imports of steel rebar had dropped by 51 per cent in 2010/2011 when compared to the previous year, in 2011/2012 imports soared again by 85 per cent. This has pushed domestic producers into losses, which was used by the Egyptian government as the justification for the safeguard measure.
The additional duty will consist of 6.8 per cent of the CIF value with a minimum of LE (Egyptian Lira) 299/ton. The duty will be applied for 200 days starting from December 2, 2012.
The investigation was initiated on 28 November 2012, following a petition filed by the Chamber of Metallurgical Industries.
