On 26 October 2012, the Mining Act was published in the official gazette of Kenya. According to the Act, all foreign mining sector investors need to involve a minimum of 35% of local shareholders if they want to apply for a licence in the country.
With this measure, the government wants to ensure a greater involvement of Kenyans in the mining sector. The Commissioner of Mining and Geology, Moses Masibo, said the new regulation refers to both exploration and mining licenses.
