Turkey has introduced a new regulation that requires 'certificates approved by the relevant authorities of the origin or loading country for herbal food and feeds as well as for articles and materials contacting with food to be imported by Turkey'. The Regulation entered into force on 1st January 2012. It deviates from the previous practice according to which a "declaration of compliance by the producer" was considered sufficient. According to the new regulation authorities of the exporting country are requested to provide 'the names of the official institutions which have the authority to sign such certificates' and 'samples of the certificates'. This new practice creates substantial additional work for the local Food Safety Authorities of the exporting countries. Those consignments of food contact materials exported from an EU country to Turkey, which have not been accompanied by a certificate, but only a declaration of compliance by the producer, are currently blocked in the Turkish customs.
