ANNOUNCED AS TEMPORARYNo
On 18 April 2012, Indonesia has suspended some imports of US beef after a case of mad cow disease, although this is the first case in the USA since 2006 and the fourth ever. Other major importers, like the EU, South Korea, Japan, and Canada have not halted the imports. Therefore, the policy appears to be a case of protectionism. This view has been confirmed by the latest BBC statement:
"Indonesia had been trying to reduce its beef imports even before the news of the infection, in an attempt to reduce its dependency on other countries." (BBC news 26 April 2012)
On 17 June 2013, the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture (according to Degree no. 4390/2013) abolished the import ban on beef from the US.
