Export ban

The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. William Ruto, announced a ban on the export of raw cashew nuts in a bid to revive the industry. He said the ban was to help protect the farmers from the middlemen that are said to control over half of the market. With the introduction of the ban, only the government and the National Cereals and Produce Board are permitted to buy raw nuts from the farmers. The ban was to be announced in the Official Gazette in the first week of August 2009.
Sometraders have reacted to the imposition of the ban claiming it will lead to a fall in farm gate prices. Othershave said the ban will ensure there is enough raw materials for processing cashew nuts for both the local and international market.
